#IWD 2024 has hit Gippsland

A brief wrap-up of our latest event - Gender Equality Starts with You

It's been two weeks since our event and we're still on a high!!

While we knew there was a need for the conversation around gender equality, the positive discussions during and after the event, have been unprecedented. We've never seen such interest from the GWIB community to take this topic on and continue to progress it within the community.

The audience was especially engaged as we head into International Women’s Day with some hard truths and discussion, along with a few laughs.

Feminist activist and Founder of The Equality Institute Dr Emma Fulu’s presentation on Gender Equality Starts with You resonated with all of us. She generously opened up on her personal journey whilst sharing her knowledge on navigating the intricacies of patriarchy, gender-based violence, and inequality.

Emma outlined five steps that everyone can take to work towards a future where fairness, equality, and respect are universal.

Step 1 - Understand the problem

Step 2 - Reflect on our own power and privilege, and apply a intersectional lens

Step 3 - Set a goal or vision

Step 4 - Determine your areas of influence

Step 5 - Take action

This was followed by a panel discussion of extraordinary leaders who are constantly championing Gippsland on many causes, such as inclusion and equality: , Jules Cole (Director, Regional Strengths & Stakeholder Engagement at Latrobe Valley Authority), Ellen-Jane Brown (Executive Officer of Latrobe Health Assembly), Kate Graham (CEO of Gippsland Women's Health) and Caitlyn Grigsby (Owner/ Director of Full Circle HR & President of Gippsland Pride), facilitated by Maree McPherson OAM.

While we might be bias you couldn't leave that event without feeling inspired, empowered and ready to help create change.

It's a conversation we will continue to championing as it's such an important topic and we came away learning so much.

And the key message... we all have the power to make change 💪🏼

One final thank you ato our amazing sponsors who, without, we simply can't run events like these - Latrobe City Council, Latrobe Health Assembly, Alan Wilson Insurance Brokers and Bonacci Agency.
